How to Get Your Stimulus Check

In order to help Americans affected by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and the resulting economic fallout, federal lawmakers have agreed to a second Coronavirus relief deal worth around $900 billion.

Part of the relief deal includes sending another round of stimulus checks to Americans. The second round of checks are a one-time payment of up to $600 per eligible person and $600 per child under the age of 17.

  • An eligible single person would receive $600
  • An eligible married couple would receive $1,200 ($600 each)
  • An eligible family of four (two adults and two children) would receive $2,400

Stimulus checks are not considered taxable income.

For more information, visit the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) website on Coronavirus Tax Relief and Economic Impact Payments.

Who is Eligible for a Stimulus Check?

You qualify for a stimulus check if you file taxes and meet one of these qualifications:

  • You’re single and make less than $75,000
  • You’re married and together, you make less than $150,000
  • You file as “head of household” and make less than $112,500

The payments decrease proportionally after $75,000 for single workers and will phase out after $87,000. For married workers, the payments will decrease after $150,000 and will phase out after $174,000. For people who file as “head of household”, the payments decrease after $112,500 and will phase out after $124,500.

The payments decrease proportionally after $75,000 and stop altogether for single workers making more than $99,000 ($198,000 for married workers and $218,000 for a family of four.)

Senior citizens, railroad retirees, and those on Social Security are still eligible. If you don’t file taxes, the IRS will use your information on Form SSA-1099 or Form RSB-1099.

Anyone who is categorized as a dependent (including many college students) will not qualify for a check.

What to Expect with Your Stimulus Check

The amount is based on your 2019 tax filings. If your 2020 income would qualify you for a larger benefit than your 2019 tax filings, the government will pay you the difference when you file your taxes for 2020.

Your stimulus check will be paid using the method you used to receive a refund check or pay your taxes. If you received a refund via Direct Deposit, your stimulus check will be paid the same way. If you received a paper check, you’ll receive a paper stimulus check.

If you receive Social Security and don’t file a tax return, your check will be based on information provided by the Social Security Administration.

Watch Out for Stimulus Check Scams

If you are contacted by anyone to fill out a form regarding your stimulus check or anyone asks you to provide an account number for your stimulus check, it’s likely fraud.

You do not have to do anything to receive a stimulus check.

Be aware of text messages, phone calls, or emails from those claiming to be the IRS. The IRS will not text, email, or call you about your stimulus check.

When Will You Receive Your Stimulus Check?

The IRS expects to begin making direct deposit payments the last week in December to people who have bank account information on file with the agency. According to the relief bill, all payments should be sent by mid-January.

The turnaround on checks is expected to be faster than April’s distribution. Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said the government is more prepared this second time around to distribute the checks which means they’ll get to individuals faster.
